What's the Difference Between Law and Gospel?

What is the difference between Law and Gospel, and why does it matter?

This is the single most important distinction in reading the Bible, and getting it wrong deforms everything downstream. God speaks two words in Scripture, and they do opposite work. The Law is God’s demand—everything He commands, requires, and threatens. Its job is to expose sin, silence our excuses, and drive us to the end of ourselves: “through the law comes knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20). The Gospel is God’s gift—everything He freely gives in Christ. Its job is to forgive, comfort, and raise the dead to life. The Law says do; the Gospel says done.

The crucial thing is that these must never be blended. The moment you slip a condition into the Gospel—God forgives you, if you first…—you have turned the good news back into law, and its comfort drains out. And the moment you soften the Law into friendly advice, you lose the very thing that makes the Gospel good news, because you no longer see why you would need it. A Law with no teeth and a Gospel with strings attached are just two ways of destroying both.

Rightly distinguishing them is the art of Christian theology, and it is how you read any passage: is this text pressing God’s demand on me (Law), or delivering God’s gift to me (Gospel)? A conscience terrified by its sin does not need more Law—it needs the pure Gospel, with no “if” left in it. A conscience grown smug and secure does not need soothing—it needs the Law to break it open first.

And notice which word gets the last say. Law drives us to Christ (Galatians 3:24); Christ is the end of the Law for everyone who believes (Romans 10:4). The Law kills so that the Gospel may make alive (2 Corinthians 3:6)—and it is the making-alive that God is truly after. His sharpest word of demand is always in the service of His deepest word of grace.
