The Church & Ministry

What Is the Church?

What is the Church? What makes a church a true church?

Ask what makes a church a true church, and most answers reach for the wrong things—the size of the crowd, the beauty of the building, the energy of the music, the right denominational label. Lutherans answer with something far more modest and far more reliable. The Church is the assembly of believers among whom the Gospel is purely preached and the Sacraments are rightly administered (Augsburg Confession VII). That is it. Wherever Christ’s Word is truly proclaimed and His Sacraments are given as He instituted them, there is the Church—because there Christ is at work creating and sustaining faith.

This means the true Church is, in one sense, finally invisible: only God knows with certainty who truly believes, and hypocrites and genuine saints sit side by side in every congregation. But it is not hidden or abstract. You can find it, because you can find its marks—the pure preaching of the Gospel and the right administration of Baptism, Absolution, and the Supper. Follow the Word and Sacraments and you have found the Church, whatever the sign out front happens to say.

There is great freedom in this. The Augsburg Confession adds that it is enough for the true unity of the Church to agree on the Gospel and the administration of the Sacraments; human traditions, ceremonies, and rites need not be identical everywhere. So the Church is not chained to one culture, one style, or one set of customs. A storefront and a cathedral can be equally the Church, if Christ is preached and given in each.

And this reframes what you are actually looking for when you look for a church home. The question is not “where is the most impressive program?” but “where is Christ handing out His gifts, as He promised?” Find that, and you have found the one holy Christian Church—not a club you join, but the flock the Good Shepherd is gathering by His voice.
