God, Christ & the Trinity

Is God Angry with Me?

Is God angry with me? How do I know whether He's for me or against me?

This question deserves an honest answer, not a cheerful dismissal. Scripture does speak of God’s wrath—his settled, righteous opposition to sin. That is not divine bad temper; it is the necessary response of holiness to evil. A God who felt nothing about cruelty, injustice, and sin would not be good. So the anxiety behind the question is not silly, and the Bible never pretends sin is harmless.

But here is the whole point of the Gospel, and it must not be missed: for the one who is in Christ, God’s wrath is not still hanging overhead, waiting to fall. It already fell—on Christ. “The punishment that brought us peace was on him” (Isaiah 53:5). Christ stepped between you and the judgment and absorbed it entirely, so that “since… we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God” (Romans 5:9). The cross is not God grudgingly tolerating you; it is God at infinite cost making a way to have you.

So to the trembling conscience the answer is a clear and specific promise: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). No condemnation. Not less, not probation—none. If you are looking to Christ, the anger has been dealt with, and what remains toward you is a Father’s love.

And notice which came first. “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son” (1 John 4:10). His love for you was not something you finally earned by cleaning up; it was the reason he sent his Son while you were still a sinner. So when guilt whispers that God must be against you, do not measure his heart by your feelings or your record. Measure it by the cross—where he showed exactly how far he would go to be for you.
