The pop-culture Antichrist — a lone future world-ruler with a number and a starring role — owes more to the prophecy charts than to the Bible. This essay reads the passages that actually use the word, and follows the Lutheran Confessions to something broader and closer to home: a spirit already at work, and a power that opposes Christ by displacing His gospel from within the church.
