Ask how much a pastor should make and the instinct is to set a ceiling. Scripture runs the other way, and it runs hard: do not muzzle the ox. This essay traces the biblical measure of a pastor’s support — double honor, rendered to a rightly called man doing the actual work — and names the two ditches on either side of the road: the hireling who fleeces the flock, and the congregation that starves its pastor and calls it humility.
