About

Larry Herzog Jr.

Larry Herzog Jr. is a confessional Lutheran layman and adult Sunday school teacher in an AFLC congregation in North Dakota. He is the author of seven books and three four-volume adult Bible study series, and he writes the weekly newsletter Ordinary Means — all of it for the people in the pew rather than the academy. He came to this work after thirty years in technology.

Larry is available for podcast interviews, radio segments, and congregational speaking on the topics of his books. Contact by email: larry@larryherzogjr.com.

Music

Larry Herzog Jr. playing the euphonium
Holding down the low end.

When he isn’t writing or teaching, Larry is usually holding down the low end on a euphonium. He’s played across the brass family for several decades — trombone and trumpet both — but the euphonium is home. He stays active across Valley City’s music scene — the Valley City Community Band, the VCSU Concert Band, and his own congregation — and is a familiar presence in the online euphonium community. And he remains convinced that, next to the Scriptures themselves, the church’s best catechism is its hymnal.

Before the books

Before any of this, Larry spent thirty years in technology. That work hasn’t entirely stopped: he takes on occasional consulting work, including IT consulting, security and surveillance systems, AI consultations, and the like. If that background is what brought you here, the same email above reaches him.
