About

Larry Herzog Jr. is a confessional Lutheran layman and adult Sunday school teacher in an AFLC congregation in North Dakota. He is the author of books, Bible studies, and free teaching resources — including manuscript-length studies of Scripture — and he writes the weekly newsletter Ordinary Means. He came to this work after thirty years in technology.

The books and studies grow out of years of teaching adults on Sunday morning, and they are written for people who will use them there: at a kitchen table, in a fellowship hall, with a Bible open and an hour to spend. Each is developed from Scripture, the Lutheran Confessions, and the primary theological and historical sources cited in the work itself. Nothing is dumbed down; nothing is assumed. If a term needs explaining, it gets explained.

Music

When he isn’t writing or teaching, Larry is usually holding down the low end on a euphonium. He’s played across the brass family for several decades — tuba, trombone, trumpet — but the euphonium is home. He stays active across Valley City’s music scene — the Valley City Community Band, the VCSU Concert Band, and his own congregation — and is a familiar presence in the online euphonium community through Euphonium Studio. And he remains convinced that, next to the Scriptures themselves, the church’s best catechism is its hymnal.
